Building a Wooden Deck for an Above-Ground Pool
Step-by-step guide made from VITALIK TATALIK's YouTube video.
A comprehensive timelapse showing the construction of a multi-level wooden deck adjacent to an above-ground swimming pool. The project covers everything from digging and pouring concrete footings to framing the structure, installing the decking, and building stairs and railings.
- Difficulty: advanced
Safety
- Always wear safety glasses, especially when cutting wood or using power tools.
- Pressure-treated lumber contains chemicals. Wear gloves when handling it and a dust mask when cutting to avoid inhaling sawdust.
- Ensure all power tools are unplugged or have their batteries removed before changing blades or bits.
Must know before you build
- Consult local building codes for footing depth, railing height, and pool proximity.
- Acclimate pressure-treated lumber on-site for a week to minimize warping after installation.
- Use ratchet straps to effectively straighten warped deck boards before fastening them down.
- A jigsaw is essential for precisely cutting the deck boards to match the pool's curve.
- Maintain a 1/8-inch gap between deck boards for proper drainage and wood expansion.
- Square the deck frame perfectly before decking to avoid non-parallel boards and difficult cuts.
Tools
- Shovel (Digging shovel)
- Tamper (Manual)
- Drill with mixing paddle (Corded, Milwaukee)
- Trowel (Hand trowel)
- Impact driver (Cordless, Milwaukee)
- Circular saw (Cordless, Milwaukee)
- Level (Milwaukee)
- Framing nailer (Cordless framing nailer, Milwaukee) (optional)
- Jigsaw (Cordless, DeWalt)
- Tape measure
- Speed square
- Ladder (A-frame, Werner)
Materials
- Spray marking paint (Marking spray paint, Orange)
- Concrete mix (Multiple bags, High-strength concrete mix)
- Cardboard concrete forms (Tube concrete forms)
- Pressure-treated lumber (4x4, 2x, and 5/4 boards)
- Deck screws
- Metal post bases
- Ratchet straps (2)
Step by step
Step 1: Prepare and Pour Concrete Footings
Mark the footing locations, dig the holes, place cardboard forms, and then mix and pour the concrete for the deck's foundation.
- Mark Footing Locations. Use spray paint to mark the precise locations for each of the deck's support footings on the ground.
- Dig and Compact Holes. Dig holes for the footings at each marked location using a shovel. Use a tamper to compact the soil at the bottom of each hole for a stable base.
- Mix and Pour Concrete. Place cardboard concrete forms in the holes. Mix bags of concrete with water in a bucket using a drill and mixing paddle, then pour the wet concrete into the forms. Smooth the top surface with a trowel.
- Watch out: Wet concrete can cause skin irritation or burns. It's best to wear gloves and long sleeves when working with it.
Step 2: Build the Deck Frame
Cut the posts and beams to size, attach the posts to the concrete footings using metal bases, and assemble the main support beams for the deck structure.
- Set Support Posts. Attach metal post bases to the cured concrete footings. Cut 4x4 posts to the required height and secure them in the bases. Use a level to ensure each post is perfectly plumb (vertically level).
- Install Beams. Construct the main support beams by fastening two boards together. Lift the beams into place on top of the posts and secure them. Use a level to check that the beams are perfectly horizontal.
- Tip: Having a helper is almost essential for lifting and positioning heavy beams safely.
Step 3: Install the Joists
Cut the floor joists to length and install them between the support beams to complete the main deck frame.
- Install Joists. Measure and cut the joists to span between the beams. Install the joists on edge, maintaining consistent spacing (typically 16 inches on center), and fasten them securely to the beams.
- Tip: Mark the joist locations on your beams beforehand to make installation faster and more accurate.
Step 4: Install Main Deck Boards
Lay the deck boards across the joists, using ratchet straps to straighten any warped boards, and fasten them in place with deck screws.
- Lay and Fasten Deck Boards. Begin laying the deck boards perpendicular to the joists. Use a consistent gap between boards for drainage and expansion, and fasten them to each joist with deck screws.
- Straighten Warped Boards. For any boards that are bowed, use ratchet straps anchored to the frame to pull them straight before screwing them down. This ensures tight, even gaps along the entire length of the board.
Step 5: Build and Attach Stair Frame
Construct the stair stringers and frame, and attach the entire stair assembly to the main deck structure.
- Cut Stair Stringers. Mark and cut the angled notches for the steps into the stair stringer boards using a circular saw.
- Assemble and Attach Stair Frame. Assemble the cut stringers into a complete stair frame and securely attach it to the main deck structure.
Step 6: Finish Decking and Cut Curves
Install the remaining deck boards, trim the overhanging ends, and then carefully mark and cut the curve of the pool into the decking for a custom fit.
- Install Remaining Deck Boards. Continue laying and fastening the rest of the deck boards, including the boards that will form the stair treads.
- Trim Overhanging Board Ends. Snap a chalk line along the outside edge of the deck and use a circular saw to trim all the overhanging deck boards for a clean, straight edge.
- Scribe and Cut the Pool Curve. Use a compass or a small block of wood as a guide to trace the curve of the pool onto the deck boards. Carefully cut along this line with a jigsaw to create a perfect fit.
- Tip: For a smoother cut, use a jigsaw blade designed for cutting curves.
Step 7: Frame the Railings
Install the 4x4 railing posts around the perimeter of the deck and attach the horizontal top and bottom rails between them.
- Install Railing Posts. Cut the 4x4 railing posts to length and attach them to the inside of the deck's rim joist. Ensure they are plumb before permanently securing them.
- Attach Top and Bottom Rails. Cut the top and bottom rails to fit snugly between the posts. Attach the bottom rail a few inches off the deck surface and then install the top rail.
Step 8: Install Balusters and Top Cap
Attach the vertical balusters to the railing frame, and install the top cap rail for a finished look.
- Install Railing Balusters. Cut the balusters (vertical pickets) to size. Attach them to the top and bottom rails, using a spacer to ensure consistent gaps between each one.
- Attach Top Cap Rail. Install the top cap rail, which is a flat board that sits on top of the 4x4 posts and the top rail, providing a finished surface and a place to set drinks.
